China International College Students’ “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition – a banquet for college students worldwide to realize their dreams of innovation and entrepreneurship

The finals of the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (abbreviated as “the Competition” below) will be held in South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China. Since the first competition in 2015, a totality of 15.7 million college students, making up 3.75 million teams have participated in the competition. Today, the competition is the most important event of college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship competition worldwide.

What changes have taken place during the six years? Let’s take a look at the statistics.

In 2015, the 1st competition happened in Jilin University.

The participants were separated into creation and practice groups in the competition. Some projects included “Internet + traditional industries”, “Internet + new industries”, “Internet + public services” and “Internet + technological platforms”.

More than 200,000 college students participated in the competition, creating 36,508 projects. 300 teams made it to the finals, and 20 teams eventually received investment of more than 80 million yuan after meeting up with investors, and 10 million yuan were invested after the competition. The competition promoted the reform of higher education, and created an example of the combination of science and application.

In 2016, the 2nd competition was held in Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The participants were divided into creative, startup and developing groups. The projects included topics of modern agriculture, manufacture, technological services, business, public service and social services. 545,808 students from 2111 colleges and universities (81% of all colleges in China and 3.3 times of the total participants of the first competition) participated in the second competition, creating 118,804 projects. Finally, 124 projects, including 4 projects from Hongkong and Macao, made it to the final rounds. During the competition, many talented students of innovation demonstrated their ideas.

In 2017, the 3rd competition was held in Xidian University. The competition included a new segment of professional development, which was set up specially for students in vocational and professional colleges. The competition also included projects of cultural innovation, and was open to international contestants with an establishment of a committee of monitors. During the competition, contestants also participated in volunteer work to help people in poverty.

The number of universities and colleges participating kept growing in the 3rd Competition: more than 370,000 signed-up projects by 1.5 million students were received during the third competition. Students from over 25 different districts and countries, including students form America, Canada, UK and Japan, making up 116 teams participated in the competition. Finally, 119 teams from mainland China and 8 teams from Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan were selected into the final round, while 18 teams made it to the international final. The competition broadened global vision and promoted the exchange and communication between college students worldwide.

In 2018, the 4th competition was held in Xiameng University. The international section kept expanding, while social work on poverty became an individual segment. Other than the main competition, 5 other projects were held simultaneously. The competition attracted over 2.65 million students, the number of students was more than the total number of participants of the previous competitions. More than 100 projects from Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan were included, and 600 teams from 50 countries participated in the international rounds. The competition was sponsored by more than 1000 enterprises and investment agencies. The projects that were accepted in the final covered topics such as astronomy, medicine, education, food industry, etc.

The competition discovered a group of young innovators through a mature international platform.

In 2019, the 5th competition was held in Zhejiang University. The competition reorganized its groups and included new segments facing high school students. The competition attracted 4.57 million students from 4,093 colleges of 124 different countries. The international group included more than 6,000 participants from 1,153 colleges.

The social work on poverty was applied all over China, bringing over 238 thousand projects to areas of poverty and helping 74.8 farmers and 24,204 companies. A total of 16,800 cooperation projects were established, generating more than 6 billion profits for people in poverty. During the international section of the final rounds, more than 100 students from 27 countries participated in the live competition, making the competition truly an international event.

In 2020, the 6th competition will be held in South China University of Technology. The 6th China International College Students’ “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has attracted more than 6 million participants from 4,186 colleges in 117 countries, creating 1.5 million projects. Due to the pandemic, the final round of the competition is to be held both in person and via internet. While the teams from mainland China will gather in South China University of Technology for the final rounds, International contestants and teams from Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan will connect with the competition via internet. As the final is about to begin, we are expecting more innovations and creative ideas this year.
