AET REMOULD has released the masterpiece for 2022—Loong, which reconstructs the ancient and mysterious Eastern culture with modern art. Hand carving and gem setting have been applied to this timepiece, while sapphire is used as strap material for the first time to offer a unique wearing experience.

Since ancient times, the mysterious Eastern world has fascinated numerous people. The dragon in the Eastern legend symbolizes nobility and honor but also embodies success. The designers of AET REMOULD are keen to break the barriers between traditional culture and modern art, and Loong is undoubtedly an ideal imagery.

How to integrate Loong’s image into watch design without losing its spirit and charm? Every day, AET REMOULD’s designers strived to answer this question.

After numerous iterations and nearly half a year of optimization, the designers got a satisfying answer and also decided to name this timepiece Loong, which is concise, powerful and coincides with the dragon’s verve.

Instead of the usual flat design, AET REMOULD invited a carving master to build a three-dimensional dragon image on the dial. 3D modelling was performed first for every single part of Loong, head, scales, tail, etc. Then overall contour cutting was done with a laser machine. Finally, every detail was carefully polished by hand.

The noble Loong sculpture is crafted from 18k white gold with a ruby in the dragon’s eye, reminiscent of a Chinese proverb “Putting the Finishing Touch to the Picture of a Dragon”.

When redesigning Daytona’s iconic cosmograph counters, the designer searched for oriental elements to match Loong’s verve and finally settled down on the beautiful ink painting, which magnified the lifelike dragon. Meanwhile, the hand at 6 o’clock was replaced by a precious orb, to depict a scene of the dragon frolicking with the orb, which is an allusion in Eastern culture.

The bezel is also made of 18K white gold, studded with emeralds cut and polished on various sides. The perfect arrangement of emeralds along the entire bezel is a highlight. That is difficult in practice as each emerald must be cut to the exact size. However,it didn’t baffle AET REMOULD’s craftsmen, who have a proficient gem setting experience.

Besides, emeralds instead of numerals are used to indicate hours, echoing with the bezel to amplify the gorgeous and dazzling jewelry.

The case is made of sapphire, through which the wonderful mechanical structure on the back is clearly revealed. A calligraphy master was invited to write the Chinese character “Loong”. After some modifications by AET REMOULD’s designer, a unique Loong rotor was built.

When it came to the strap, AET REMOULD chose one of the hardest materials on earth—sapphire. With a Mohs grade of 9.0, it is hard and lustrous, but also easy to crack. That often causes problems in cutting, polishing, etc., which means a low yield and high cost. This is the fundamental reason why many watchmakers don’t utilize sapphire.

Thanks to years of research and practice in the sapphire case, AET REMOULD is able to realize the sapphire strap. AET REMOULD’s craftsmen first cut out the separate parts and then polished each surface to ensure zero flaws. Finally, high-strength bolts were used to connect and fasten the sapphire parts for a pure and flawless strap. Applying sapphire to the case and strap greatly enhances the texture of Loong, while providing a comfortable wearing experience.

The Loong timepiece is undoubtedly a brand new attempt and breakthrough for AET REMOULD. It is a rare treasure in the watch industry, from the craftsmanship of relief sculpture to the bold application of the sapphire.
