Harkness Screens Announce Online Purchasing Trials

Harkness Screens have serviced the cinemas of the United Kingdom since 1929, introducing innovative technologies to support superior presentation.

Stevenage – 5th August, 2019 – Harkness Screens, the world’s leading supplier of projection screen surfaces, announced today that it would be trialling an online ordering system for selected event and ProAV customers in the UK from 1st August. This comes one and a half months after Harkness had announced plans to invest in the development and deployment of their full digital resources.

Harkness Screens have serviced the cinemas of the United Kingdom since 1929, introducing innovative technologies to support superior presentation. The business started in Glasgow, offering screens as a service as at the time cloth screens were taken down and laundered. Inevitably the woven screens would shrink, meaning a different screen would have to be installed and the original screen was then placed at another location. Woven screens had plenty of downsides, they were not fire retardant, prone to mildew and they shrank. Those criteria fuelled founder, Andrew Harkness, to consider alternatives and it was his son, Tom, that would introduce PVC screens to the cinemas of the UK and eventually the world.

In 2013, Harkness brought the Digital Screen Modeller to cinema, allowing engineers, technologists and architects to perfect the design of an auditorium to provide the optimum conditions for presentation quality. This functionality continues to improve and online ordering is the latest addition. The company will start a beta trial for screens that are supplied for events and ProAV.

Andrew Emmott, Business Development Manager at Harkness, said, “Working with the team at Event Projection, we have created a portal for the online purchasing of screen surfaces. We have given them access to a limited portfolio of products for the trial. It is designed to be intuitive, have a fresh and uncluttered feel, whilst providing an assisted ordering pathway. Initially, this trial is only going to cover UK based event screen customers during the trial period.”
