North America, comprising the US, Canada, and Mexico, held the largest share of the market in 2016. The US is a major contributor to the growth of the market in North America. Being technologically advanced and economically developed, North America is the leading market for cutting-edge display technologies such as direct-view fine-pixel LED and OLED. In APAC countries such as Japan, South Korea, China, and India, the large population as well as the thriving retail and transportation sectors have created immense opportunities for display manufacturers. The market for newer and high-cost displays, such as OLED and fine-pixel LED, is expected to witness a higher growth rate in North America, whereas comparatively low-cost displays such as LCD and large-pixel LED are expected to witness a higher growth rate in APAC and RoW regions.

The major players in the market are Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (South Korea), LG Display Co., Ltd. (South Korea), NEC Corp. (Japan), Leyard Optoelectronic Co., Ltd. (China), Sharp Corp. (Foxconn) (Japan), Barco NV (Belgium), Sony Corp. (Japan), and TPV Technology Ltd. (Hong Kong).

The Large Format Display Market has witnessed significant technological advancements in the last decade, such as the narrow bezel LCD displays and direct-view fine-pixel LED displays. Bulky and space-consuming display devices have evolved into slim and bezel-less devices. Modern display devices have high resolution and improved contrast ratio, and consume less power than traditional display devices that were based on cathode ray tube (CRT) and cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology. High competition in the market has led to the development and launch of new aesthetically appealing products with high-end specifications.

Direct-view LED is a video display technology that uses LEDs to produce red, blue, and green colors. As LED is an emissive light technology, the display based on direct-view LED provides images that are brighter and higher in contrast than the transmissive technology-based traditional LCD displays. LED displays are energy-efficient, and have better color accuracy and refresh rates compared to any display type available today. In terms of lifespan, LCD display lasts between 35 to 50 thousand hours, whereas an LED display can be operational for up to 100 thousand hours. Fine-pixel direct-view LED displays have no bezels and can be tiled together to form a completely seamless and limitless video wall. These qualities make direct-view LED an excellent choice for large-scale digital signage and other applications that demand high-impact visuals.

Being a lower-resolution display technology, direct-view LED-based displays have predominantly been used for outdoor applications, while LCD displays largely dominate the indoor display market. However, the development of smaller or fine-pixel LEDs in the recent years has made much higher resolutions possible. Owing to these recent advancements, direct-view LEDs are a viable option for indoor video wall applications. With the improvements in technology, the distance between individual LEDs—known as pixel pitch—has become smaller, resulting in resolution approaching that of an LCD display and opening up opportunities for new deployments.
